Sketch hour

I've been working hard on an animated short film lately, handling character and prop design, so in between work and life I try to still give myself at least a couple hours a week to just sketch for fun and practice. This is my time to relax, watch television and just let my brain wander... sort of stretching my sketch-muscles.

Here a sketchbook page from one such session a couple weeks ago:

(these are Prismacolor markers and Prismacolor colored pencils on paper)

Are these from your mind or do you sketch looking at references?
These are beautiful and I very much enjoy your blog! :)

Thanks, Junko. Much of this is from reference. I will look at animal books, but I will exaggerate and distort, embellish, enhance expressions, and change the image a bit. Also color choice is a fun variable.

Thanks for the kind words. :)

Wow, thank you for responding to my comment Joe!
I love learning from other artists so I really appreciate it!
Looking forward to more of your works! :)

That hummingbird is gorgeous! I just did a tattoo recently of a hummingbird and it turned out pretty nice, but the dynamics of the one you've drawn here is just swell! You have a great gift for capturing emotion.
