FAT magazine spot

This is an illustration completed for the Winter issue of NAKED EYE magazine, Canada's only Popular Culture and Entertainment Magazine. The article was about Canadian actor Ryan Gosling being fired by director Peter Jackson, from the role he was hired and gained so much weight for, as well as the motives of other actors gaining weight or losing weight for roles.

This is a digital painting (photoshop) from a pencil sketch.

Great job, Joe! Very realistic. Did you use colors from a color photo reference, or did you make them up?

Good shit man! good shit! keep em comin!

EGBIAG-

I use some colors from a photo (after getting the colors how I want them) as reference when starting the base of the painting. Of course after I am finished blocking it in, I change them quite a bit. This is a great way of being confident with digital tools to achieve a certain look, but I don't recommend it all the time.

The faces is the only place I used some "eyedropper" tool, in this piece.

Thanks, BigSam!

Looks great Joe! The shirt is a bit flat as the pattern shows or seems to give the impression that it has been pasted in on a layer? Just my 2 cents, I know you will forgive me!?

If the "new" book includes all this recent stuff put me on the waiting list now brother!!!

Happy New Year Joe!

Actually I dig the shirt pattern and how it just turns into a shape on the left. Good likeness too. I'm curious, did you find fat reference for him?

That hilarious. I also really like how the shirt is done. I'm sure its just a style preference for most people.

How about a close up of his face.
Do you record these illustration projects Joe?
Would be great to see on your Digital Podcast site.

Steve (and Ken) - yes, it's a flat patter that I created for a graphic effect. I was going to render the shape of the shirt, but the Editor wanted the shirt patter of his latest movie's character to stand out, and with such a bold obvious use of a pattern, I decided that using it as a graphic element would a) save time, b) look cool and bold c) bring it from a "just a shirt" to a symbol.

I realize the risk this brings, but I enjoy flat and cartoony elements in painting, whether meshing or not.

Vincenzo - The new book will have LOTS of stuff... and I've not even really announced the book yet. Sit tight. :)

Brian - I haven't done that, but have been thinking about it. I may do that soon. It's a good idea.

Thanks! By the way, it's done from a photo where he is a bit overweight (from this role), but the size is exaggerated. The body is done from separate reference, partially without reference.

Great job on this illustration. At first I didn't like the graphic cheat on the shirt...but then I thought about it again and realized it's unexpected and cool (this all happened in about 10 seconds). And happy new year!

Ha, very nice fat Ryan Gosling. I like the Method Acting 101 book. Great work! By the way you should do another one of your video podcasts when you get time, I really enjoy those.

Just super work Joe - really great! I like the repeated pattern shirt - makes the viewer linger that little bit longer I think (did me anyways!). Out of interest what typical size are your digital images?(I've just got a wacom but never know how big to make the image!)??!

Steve Hearn said...

I dig the shirt too, its the angle of the pattern that appears off and seems to flatten the bulging large stomach!

Nice colours Joe but what i really like is the distortion on the body, well done!

That's a great one, Joe. Really diggin' the pattern on the shirt, personally. A great likeness in the face, too, especially impressive in that he's such a long, then faced guy, but it still reads as him under the fat. The book is a nice touch as well.

I love it. your skills blow me away every time.

Santa brought me your REJECTS book this Christmas. I must've been really good.

I don't know where your reference was, but that is exactly how fat people jeans hang. For some reason, that is my favourite part!

Thanks for the enlargement of the head, it's very helpful for me to see the exact way you place your colours/brushes/shadows....
Oh yes, I like the shirt. I always say: the flatter, the better.
